I can only ring my phone from the Cube when the app is open

Your bluetooth will need to always be on. Also please keep in mind when you first close the Cube app the device will temporarily disconnect from your phone for a few minutes to switch from running in the foreground (when the app is open on your device) to running in the background (when the app is closed). Allow a few minutes to pass after closing the app then try again.
